Literary Device: Symbolism

Eyes are one of the most prominent symbols demonstrated throughout Fallen Through. Our “good” character’s eyes are full of colour; they are bright, bold and beautiful. There’s so much electricity and life in my character’s eyes, and if there is a contrast to that, then my intention is to display that they are not/they are no longer a good character.

I’d also argue that the colour of my character’s eyes indicate how far down the Rabbit hole they are with drug addiction as we see Tyler’s eyes eventually change over time and become similar to Evan’s.

It is my intention to portray the eyes as “dull, empty and void” as I believe that’s your body’s way of displaying the trauma it’s experiencing externally. Internally, we are not privy to as it’s hidden and we can’t see the inner state of the mind. The eyes are the window to your soul and it was 100% my intention to give the reader a view into our character’s soul through using the eyes as symbolism.
