Easter Egg: Number Three

Everything Left Unsaid by Jessica Davidson is my favourite novel I’ve ever read (aside from mine of course!). I discovered this novel at the end of 2012 after borrowing it from the Mitcham library. I’ve re-read it probably a hundred times since then and although the novel had a tragic tone, I was hooked on that “happily-never after”. I loved a dark, bleak and twisted ending, and always craved a non-traditional outcome. This novel heavily inspired my novel and Fallen Through would not be where it is today without this influence.

In Chapter Five, I make direct reference to this novel as Della reads to pass the time. She feels unsettled by such an outcome of a seventeen-year old boy who’s life is ripped away by illness but it’s deliberate to foreshadow Tyler’s life being ripped away by illness (just not in the way we’d think!)

I also loved the alternating change of narrator in each chapter, and haven’t seen this adapted in any other novel I’ve read to this date. I also incorporated this style into my own writing as I thought it was so incredibly powerful.

Go give this novel a read if you’re craving more after Fallen Through! It is an example of excellence!
