Literary Device: Characterisation

As previously discussed in some of my other blog posts, Della is a naïve character—she is so blinded by the love she has for Tyler that she ultimately refused to see some of the more glaring signs that it isn’t what she thinks it is.

I purposefully included a game in Chapter Twenty where Della and Tyler have to detect when the other one is telling a lie, and Della fails at this and loses the game. She cannot tell when Tyler is lying but still remains under the impression that he would never lie or betray her.

It is so important that we see Della differently after this as we, the audience, know that Tyler has been lying and mistreating her, but Della cannot find it in herself to see Tyler for who he truly is and continues putting faith into him despite the odds being stacked against them.
