I truly struggled pairing this “idea” to a literary device as I’m not sure exactly sure where it fits. Though, I have settled on irony as nothing else quite matched the way I tried expressing this idea.
July 9th is referenced throughout the novel as one of the best days they shared together; Della and Tyler felt that they were at their “peak” during this day and that it was so perfect and special. This date is repeatedly referenced throughout the novel by both of our protagonists as they both hold that day closely to their hearts.
However—July 9th never was a perfect day; in fact, this day included a moment where Tyler was forced to tell Della about his kiss with Tegan and then refused to enlighten her further about his behaviour and night at Luis’ farewell party. There were so many lies that Tyler was telling, and therefore, their relationship was not at its “strongest” and it hadn’t been for a long time. However, we learn that neither of the characters ever learn this to be the case, which is very sad in its own way.
