Literary Device: Foreshadowing

There was a real dream that I had in April 2020 about one of my former friends passing away after being consumed by smoke. I incorporated this situation into Fallen Through as it was a nightmare that genuinely spooked me for days—I was perturbed and unsettled, and decided to write about it as it was sticking with me and although it never was reoccurring (thankfully), I’d find myself thinking about it more often than I should’ve.

Not only was it an unfortunate factual experience, but I felt I could implement this dream into Fallen Through and use it as foreshadowing toward Tyler’s eventual fate. I wish I could say I didn’t welcome “Tyler” back with open arms after his first attempted break up, but we see Della show admirable strength in the first instance and she seems strong in not breaking after Tyler reaches out again… Until she has that nightmare and she calls Tyler in a panic to ensure that he’s okay.

Tyler is eventually “consumed” by smoke and his heart stops, which parallels what essentially happens at the climax of Fallen Through.
