Rich Girl – Daryl Hall & John Oates
When “Tyler” and I were on the blanket, sitting by the beach, we had music playing from his phone. One of the songs I remember from that night was Rich Girl because he knew all the words flawlessly.
The hill that we sat on had a myriad of spiky bushes growing out of it. I was quite confused as being naïve and only eighteen, I didn’t think it was possible for plants to grow out of sand, but they had. I still remember squealing as the bush rat scurried past us and it truly highlighted the differences between us.
He had grown up quite poor and was used to dirty surroundings and unexpected wildlife. I was not; I was privileged and was used to sitting in private areas on the beach where bartenders would serve you while you lay on your chair.
I liked this area, though, and although it was normal to him, I hoped it would be my new normal too. Although I wouldn’t consider myself upper class, he thought I was loaded compared to where he came from.
After our last night at the beach together, we went back to the hotel and watched Season 2 of Australian Survivor—my favourite reality television show. It was the episode where Tara prevailed and got her revenge against AK, the villain of the season. It ended up being our last night ever together, and I never saw him again afterwards; but, if there was a night to end it on, this was the perfect way.
