Falling – Harry Styles
Upon reflection, I cannot believe we are nearly halfway through this musical pairings series. It absolutely blows my mind. Anyhoo…
This song came easy to me this week, and definitely reflects Tyler’s current situation. He recognises how the drugs have impacted his relationships with his friends, family and Della and has an emotional breakdown when sitting with Matthew.
I think this perfectly parallels the title of the novel as currently falling but hasn’t quite fallen through on his promises and potential just yet.
Tyler is clearly feeling guilty hiding so many instances from Della and is almost at his breaking point. He realises he has to tell Della but is too afraid of losing her; he’s plagued by nostalgia and memories from the previous week—coffees and burgers at FrenchFry by the beach, the moment where he tells Della he’s the one for her, and drinking in the comfort of their hotel room. There was too much purity and he didn’t want to taint it and ruin their almost perfect time together.
Tyler is falling down… And now is the time to either action his wrongdoings and face the consequences, or continue down this slippery slope. Based on the title of this novel, I think we can gather which route Tyler opts to take…
Also ironically, Chapter Thirteen’s featured song is Fallin’ by Jessica Mauboy. Oh, how the tables have turned in this ballad titled the same.
