Call If You Need Me – Vance Joy
Before allocating a song to each chapter, I normally re-read the content to get a feel and understanding of the emotion felt by our protagonists. I like to immerse myself back into this world I created and let my instincts whisper to me.
This song came to me immediately; it was buried deep within my soul and I haven’t heard it in years, but it’s been revived and is perfect for this chapter.
The imagery that’s referenced in Joy’s lyrics are beautiful and correlate wonderfully to this chapter; the connection to the morning, the shower, and the suitcase. It’s a vulnerable chapter where Tyler and Della’s love is comfortable and is at its peak. It’s at its calm before the storm comes.
There’s a shift in tone at the midway point of the song, where there’s risk, which alludes to the oval scene between Tyler and Della. It’s bold, and it gets the adrenaline pumping, highlighting the passion and love between them. Overall, it highlights the happiest they’ve ever been.
I’ve also snuck a little Easter Egg into this chapter, referencing a song allocated to another chapter within the dialogue… See if you can find it!
