Chapter Seventeen

everything i wanted – Billie Eilish

Another week and another struggle trying to associate a song with this chapter. I could’ve gone with another stereotypical love song to complement the themes of the chapter, but I did opt for something different and a little darker.

In this chapter, Tyler does grapple with his own potential impending mortality. He is vulnerable with Della and opens up to her about his Congenital Heart Disease and is worried about her investing in him as a partner due to a shorter life expectancy, but similarly to within Eilish’s lyrics, Della reassures Tyler that she’s all in. She makes Tyler feel that his presence on this Earth mattered and that it would be a little less bright without him in it.

There is a LOT of foreshadowing in this chapter, which I’ll refrain from pointing out for now, but I will say that it is filled to the brim and that you should really pay attention upon a second read.

We also learn more about Tyler’s insecurity and how he cares about how he’s perceived—to his own detriment to a degree. But when Della is by his side, he seems to care less and validate himself and his importance to the world.
